Mai is the alias for composer/musician/producer Steve McCourt. Originally from Dublin and now based in Shanghai, his main focus is electronic music. He holds a PhD in composition and a Master’s Degree in Music Technology.

Besides his work as Mai, Steve has also composed electroacoustic works and music for orchestra. He has also performed and released music with the rock band Pharmacy, the electronic band Inphase, and solo electronic music under the name Stellar 8.

Steve’s work has featured at international music events in South Korea, China, Portugal, the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Croatia and Ireland. His music has also been broadcast in Ireland, the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Austria, Portugal, the U.K. and Albania. He has worked with artists such as John Scott (choreographer), Charles Atlas (video artist), Ian Wilson (composer), Mary Wycherley (dance/film artist) and Holly Kennedy (filmmaker). His work has been commissioned by the Irish Modern Dance Theatre, the Royal Hibernian Academy of Art and RTE Lyric FM.
